Control is an Illusion

Matt Hearn

My wife loves to plan out our vacations. It brings her join to prepare for every moment to get the most out of every day. There is virtue in this attention to detail. We have been able to bypass ticket lines at major sightseeing venues. She has also found some amazing things that are overlooked by others.

It is also frustrating and stressful for her when things don’t work out according to plan. She plans for every variable and the loss of control is what stresses her.

Can you identify with this? How important is controlling your environment essential to your peace of mind? There is no shame is recognizing the source of your stress. It is the only path to real and lasting peace.

The question for our day; Can you trust God with your life and the lives of those you love while chaos spins around you? It may take a moment to get there, but if you want peace you must work towards trusting God whatever may be. When people face an uncertain fearful future they will sometimes say, “It’s all in God’s hands”. This is said as a sign of resignation, “this situation is beyond my ability to control”. Well my friend, it has always been that way. The sense of control is and always will be a comforting illusion. When we say, “it’s all in God’s hands”, we are simply coming around to the reality of things. When you awaken to this reality don’t shrink back. Instead press in close to God, reach for his hand, and let him lead you through. Listen to James the brother of Jesus; James 4:8 “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you”. Loss of control and certainty forces us to find solid grounding in God.

Here are some promises that you can cling to when things seem out of your control. Romans 8:28, Jeremiah 29:11, Joshua 1:9, Matthew 6:34, Isaiah 41:10,

Philippians 4:6, and Psalm 121
