From John 12:25, “Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” Holiness and a life dedicated to God is its own reward, but the fruit of the kingdom is not easily obtained. Here is the paradox of our faith, we must choose daily to follow, and to let go of the things that hold our hearts so that the kingdom of God can reign. But why do we persist in holding on to the temporal rather than grasping for the eternal? Jesus says it later in the same chapter, John 12:43, “for they loved human glory more than the glory that comes from God.” To help the disciples understand and to drive home the point, Jesus leads us by example. He washed the disciples feet, an act of service and humility.
John 13:3 "Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God,4 got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself.5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him."
Humility and service are the marks of a true disciple. God, we need your power to transform our hearts. God give us grace so that your love can be reflected in us as we serve.
