A Father's Love

Matt Hearn

This past year has been a year of fear, difficulty and pain. All the while God has been with our family each step of the way. It has challenged and deepened our faith. God is good to us.

I have been through a lot physically, yet all of it pales in comparison to seeing the fear and pain on the faces of my wife and children. One the hardest days happened a few weeks ago. My son texted, and asked me pick him up from school. I returned his text by saying I couldn’t because I cannot drive. In Georgia you cannot drive for six months following a seizure. He responded, “Daddy, I am so stressed, I can barely breath and my chest is so tight”. I wasn’t sure what was happening but I found a ride and went to his aid. When we got home I asked him to sit next to me and tell me about it. Tears welled up in his eyes and his lipped quivered. “Daddy, I so scared that you might die.” Lori and I knew he was struggling but up to this point he had been unable or unwilling to let it out. He came and sat in my lap. I held him while we cried and we comforted each other as we could. We prayed and I reminded him of God's promises and how far we had already come. He is my boy, I could not bear his suffering.

As a father, watching your child hurting is more than you can bear. God loves you and me as his very own children in the same way. Here is a look into the way your father loves you.

Judges 10:15-16; But the Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.” Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer.” God could not bear it, just like a father who hurts when his children suffer. Whatever you face know this, your father is with you and on your side. Jesus said, Your Father knows what you need before you ask. He is the giver of good gifts, including his presence in your trial. Call out to him, he is good and kind. He is with you and for you. God Bless you, and may God bring you comfort.

My heart breaks for Jack, but I'm glad that he was finally able to get some of that fear out and talk to you about it. Praying for you guys and for a sense of peace and hope for Jack.
