Surprised by Suffering

Matt Hearn

It is not uncommon to be surprised or confused by our suffering or the suffering of ones we love. How can God allow this to happen? I think that many people have come to the conclusion that following Christ should be an end to suffering. Faith means a trouble fee life. When this is the mindset, suffering becomes an affront to their person and a crisis of faith. This is not the experience of Christians down through the ages. Jesus himself said, “In this world you will have trouble.” Peter dispels this notion. When trouble comes, instead of crisis Peter calls for rejoicing. This is a strange New Testament theme. 1 Peter 4:12&13 “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed.” What do we do when we are suffering? -Rejoice and be glad for God’s glory will be revealed in you through this trial. Peter goes on. I Peter 4:19 “Therefore, let those suffering in accordance with God’s will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator, while continuing to do good.” -Understand God’s character and trust him. God is a good and loving Father who can be trusted. Give yourself to him. -Do good. We are created to do good works. Allow God to use your hurt for the healing of others and his glory.
